#SmallStone Day One: Jan ’13 Mindful Writing Challenge

Starting today and for the rest of the month, I’ll be taking part in the Mindful Writing Challenge hosted by Kaspa and Satyavani of Writing Our Way Home. They describe it this way (the short version): “Start 2013 by making space for beauty and a little serenity. Commit to write a small stone every day during January,” and to do so is this simple: “1. Notice something properly every day during January. 2. Write it down.”

Small Stone Day One: Waiting

As I write, you wait. You begin so patiently, watching and waiting, still and quiet. Sometimes I even forget you are there, other times you forget and fall asleep. When you can’t wait anymore, you whine quietly, shift your weight from one foot to the other, or you nudge your nose into my leg or put your head into my lap, or sometimes even offer me a toy, reminding me you are there–waiting.

Today is the first ever Mindful Writing Day. Fiona of Writing Our Way Home describes it this way:

How? Write a small stone by paying proper attention to one thing and writing it down. Know that people all over the world will be doing the same. Post it on your blog or Facebook or put it up on your fridge….

Why? Because writing small stones will stitch you to the world, one word at a time. They will point you towards the deep pink frilly roses in next door’s front garden, and the swooshing sound of trains in the distance. They will help you to fall hopelessly in love with the world.

My small stone for today is:

Writing my morning pages, I realize that silence isn’t quiet in our house. It’s clock ticking, heater whispering, refrigerator growling and popping, neighbor’s dog barking, dog at my feet sighing, thoughts chattering, pen scratching on paper.
